Daniel Noboa, known for his strong stance on crime, was re-elected as President of Ecuador in the recent run-off election on Sunday. Noboa, representing the right-wing National Democratic Action party, easily defeated Luisa González of the left-wing Citizen Revolution Movement, the party of former influential President Rafael Correa.
The final vote count by the National Electoral Council showed that Noboa received approximately 55.8% of the votes, with González securing around 44%. Over 90% of the ballots have been counted, affecting more than 13 million eligible voters in Ecuador, where voting is obligatory.
Noboa, born in Miami and with a fortune in banana trade, was an unexpected winner in the snap election in 2023, which was held to replace the outgoing President Guillermo Lasso. This victory marked the beginning of his 16-month presidency.
