Iran is expected to object to a US proposal to transfer its stockpile of enriched uranium to a third country, such as Russia, as part of Washington’s efforts to limit Tehran’s civil nuclear program and prevent it from being used to develop a nuclear weapon. The issue is seen as a key obstacle to a future agreement and was raised during the initial talks between Iran’s foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, and Donald Trump’s special envoy Steve Witcoff in Muscat, Oman. Iran argues that the stockpile should remain in Iran under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) as a precautionary measure.
