A married couple in their 70s and 80s were fishing at a spot in northern Sydney when a tragic accident occurred. The 86-year-old man accidentally struck his 74-year-old wife with their car, causing both of them to end up in the Parramatta River in Greenwich. The woman was rescued by a nearby worker and is currently in the Royal North Shore hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Unfortunately, the man died at the scene, and his body was recovered by police divers on Monday.
According to Detective Superintendent Paul Devaney, the couple had just unloaded their fishing gear at the Greenwich Sailing Club when the accident happened. The husband went to park the car, but it accelerated towards the woman, hitting her and crashing through a fence. Devaney described the incident as both distressing and tragic.
Although the police have declared the scene a crime scene and begun an investigation, they are still trying to determine the cause of the accident. The car, which is currently submerged about 10 meters underwater, will be retrieved with the help of a large crane and undergo forensic examination.
Additionally, a 55-year-old man from the Central Coast, who witnessed the incident, attempted to help both the man and the woman. Devaney stated that the passerby is understandably traumatized by the event.
