Hong Kong Post announced on Wednesday that it would suspend mail services by sea to the US and air mail services for goods from 27 April due to US tariffs deemed as “bullying”.
Senders in Hong Kong should be prepared for exorbitant fees caused by the US’s unreasonable acts, according to Hong Kong Post’s statement.
The US is accused of being unreasonable and imposing tariffs abusively, with Hong Kong Post refusing to collect any tariffs on behalf of the US.
Other postal items containing documents and no goods will not be affected.
Hong Kong, a special administrative region of China, is face the same tariffs as China due to a US government notice.
Hong Kong Post’s suspension is due to the US government’s elimination of the “de minimus” exemption and the increase in tariffs for postal items from Hong Kong containing goods to the US from May 2.
Although Hong Kong was known for its free and open trading, China’s imposition of a national security law in 2020 drew criticism from the US and led it to end the region’s special status under US law.
