The Mistaken Removal: A Man Wrongly Detained in a Salvadoran Prison Due to Trump’s Immigration Policies

Kilmar Ábrego García, at the age of 16, came to the United States following threats from criminal gangs in El Salvador. Along with his brother, he established a new life in Maryland. In 2019, he found himself in trouble when immigration officials accused him of being a gang member, although his lawyers refuted these claims and pointed to his lack of any criminal record. Considering the dangers he would face if deported back to El Salvador, a judge granted him protected status, preventing deportation. Living a quiet life, working as a metal worker, and starting over with his family, things took a turn when Donald Trump announced a crackdown on deporting criminals. Despite the fact that Ábrego García’s deportation was later admitted to be a clerical error, the Trump administration stated they could not intervene, while El Salvador’s president declared he would stay in prison. Now, the supreme court case could determine his fate.
