Maryland Senator Chris Van Hollen Encounters El Salvadorian Returnee Kilmar Ábrego García

US Senator Chris Van Hollen met with Kilmar Ábrego García, a man who had been deported in error from Maryland to a mega-prison in El Salvador. Despite an order from a federal judge to return him to the US, the administration refused. Following the meeting, El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele also declined to release Mr. Ábrego García, stating he would remain in the country’s custody. The White House alleged that Mr. Ábrego García is a member of the transnational Salvadoran gang MS-13, a designated foreign terrorist organization, and refused to allow him back into the US.
