Prime Minister of Canada, Mark Carney faced repeated criticism from his Conservative opponent during an election debate on Thursday. Though recent polls reveal Conservative Pierre Poilievre’s party trailing behind Carney’s Liberals, the competition remains intense. Since Carney succeeded Justin Trudeau as prime minister on 14 March, his party’s momentum has increased, with another debate taking place on Wednesday night, this time in French. The Conservative party head has been denounced for focusing his attacks on the Liberals instead of the US, following widespread dissatisfaction in Canada over President Donald Trump’s trade policies and concerns of annexation. As the campaign progresses, Poilievre has aimed to condemn Trump while asserting the Liberals’ weakening of the economy and Canada’s vulnerability to US policies under Trudeau’s leadership. He also claimed that the Liberals have gave “Donald Trump and the US a near monopoly over Canada’s energy” by refusing to build pipelines for Canadian oil export. Carney, a former central banker with no parliamentary experience, has emphasized that the biggest risk facing the Canadian economy is Donald Trump, stating he is ready to stand up against him.
