US targets Houthi fuel facility in Yemen

The US military claims to have demolished a fuel depot in Yemen during its recent strikes against the Houthis. The objective of the attack on the Red Sea port of Ras Isa was to curb supplies and funding for the Iranian-backed movement.

According to the Houthis, the attack resulted in the deaths of at least 33 individuals, including several paramedics. The strike on Thursday follows an increase in US military operations against the Houthis, which began a month ago.

Further information on the reported death toll provided by Houthi media has not been immediately commented on by US officials, Reuters news agency reported.

The Iran-backed Houthi rebels initiated attacks on commercial ships in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden after the onset of the Israel-Gaza war in October 2023. These attacks have resulted in the sinking of vessels and have forced numerous shipping companies to cease using the Red Sea, a critical global trade route through which almost 15% of seaborne trade passes.

Over the past month, the US has intensified its targeting of Houthi sites in Yemen, including an operation that was exposed through a Signal chat when a journalist was accidentally added to a group of senior officials.
