The Trump administration is considering a plan to drastically scale down the United States’ diplomatic footprint across the globe. This includes a proposal to shut down close to 30 embassies and consulates, with over half of them being situated in Africa.
Integral to a larger agenda to slash the State Department budget by nearly 50%, this plan aims to decrease foreign aid by roughly 75%.
A confidential State Department paper reveals that among the proposed closures are embassies in Lesotho, Eritrea, Central African Republic, Republic of Congo, The Gambia, and South Sudan. The proposed list also includes consulates in Durban, South Africa, and Douala, Cameroon, with potential reallocations of their duties to adjacent countries.
