Californian inmate that fled and murdered the head of a top Mexican law enforcement agency has been apprehended.

An escaped California inmate, Cesar Hernandez, who is linked to the murder of a Mexican police unit leader while he was on the run, was captured in Tijuana, Mexico.

Hernandez, 34, was taken into custody by Mexico’s State Investigation Agency.

Hernandez is suspected of being involved in the shooting death of 33-year-old Abigail Esparza Reyes, a leader with the Mexican police unit known as the “Gringo Hunters,” which focuses on capturing U.S. fugitives in Mexico.

Esparza Reyes was shot and killed on April 9 in Tijuana while the police unit was trying to arrest Hernandez.

According to the Baja California prosecutor’s office, the arrest showcases the excellent intelligence and investigative work by the State Attorney General’s Office. Coordinated efforts, tactical analysis, and data collection made it possible to accurately locate Hernandez.
