Munich’s fire department announced the closure of the Eisbachwelle, a well-known wave in the city center, which attracts both local and international surfers as well as onlookers.
According to a post on X, the closure on Saturday was necessary to conduct further investigations, citing a potential danger to surfers. The area has been cordoned off and marked with signs, but the duration of the closure remains unknown.
This decision comes after the dramatic rescue of a surfer on Wednesday evening. The surfer fell from her board and her leash got entangled at the bottom of the Eisbach river. Due to the strong current, bystanders were unable to free her. After 30 minutes in the river, she was rescued by firefighters and resuscitated on the river bank, subsequently taken to the hospital in critical condition.
The Eisbachwelle is a popular tourist attraction that draws surfers and spectators from all over the world, even in winter. The artificial wave, measuring around 0.5 meters (1.6 feet), is created where the Eisbach stream encounters a concrete step as it emerges from underground. Surfing the wave is challenging due to the strong current and shallow water.
