Protest Movement Sweeps US in Opposition to Trump – DW – April 20, 2025

Thousands of activists convened at numerous sites throughout the United States on Saturday to protest President Donald Trump’s stringent policies. The demonstrators objected to Trump’s robust immigration measures, budget reductions, pressure on educational institutions, media outlets, and law firms, as well as his strategies in handling conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza.

The Saturday protests followed the “Hands Off” rallies from two weeks prior, though they appeared to draw less attendees. Since taking office, both Trump and billionaire Elon Musk have instituted comprehensive government spending cuts, shed over 200,000 government workers, and aimed to dismantle fundamental federal agencies, such as USAID and the Department of Education.

The protests, labeled as “50501,” symbolizing 50 demonstrations across 50 states and a single movement, were coordinated by a group to respond swiftly to the purported anti-democratic and unlawful acts of the Trump administration and its plutocratic allies.

Protesters voiced support for migrants affected by Trump’s deportation measures, showed unity with government personnel who lost their jobs, and stood against the potential funding cuts to universities. Individuals in New York marched under slogans like “No Kings in America” and “Resist Tyranny.”

In Washington D.C., demonstrators conveyed concern that Trump was undermining democracy and the country’s foundational ideals. Some participants donned keffiyeh scarves, chanting “Free Palestine,” while others carried the Ukrainian flag in solidarity with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. In San Francisco, protestors marched yelling “IMPEACH + REMOVE,” with several waving an inverted U.S. flag, typically a signal of distress.
