At the age of 14 years and 23 days, Vaibhav Suryavanshi made a significant impact for Rajasthan in their match against Lucknow by scoring 34 runs, including three sixes.
Vaibhav Suryavanshi stepped into the Indian Premier League (IPL) as its youngest debutant and made a compelling entrance with a powerful six off his very first ball.
The left-handed batsman from Rajasthan Royals played in place of captain Sanju Samson in their game against Lucknow Super Giants and demonstrated his potential in their pursuit of 181 runs. He began with a strong hit over extra cover against Shardul Thakur.
Shane Watson of Australia reacted amidst the broadcast, “My word, what the hell was that?”
“One of the hardest shots in cricket is to power over cover from the front foot … The 14-year-old has shown remarkable power. What an entrance to the world stage,” Watson commented.
Suryavanshi, inspired by West Indies legend Brian Lara, continued his impressive debut with two more sixes in his 20-ball innings scoring 34 runs. His performance concluded with an 85-run opening partnership with Yashasvi Jaiswal. Although Rajasthan eventually lost the match by two runs, Suryavanshi’s innings were lauded.
Rajasthan’s spin bowling coach, Sairaj Bahutule, noted the importance of giving Suryavanshi the chance to play. “He batted well in practice, his preparation was good,” Bahutule said to the reporters.
“It was clear that the absence of Sanju opened the door for Vaibhav, and he seized the opportunity admirably. He played very well.”
Stating the young player’s strengths, Bahutule continued, “He’s an exceptional kid with a sound mind who has a versatile game. He’s courageous and clearly focused on playing his shots with the belief in ‘watch the ball, hit the ball’.”
Suryavanshi made news in November when he became the youngest player to secure a contract in the Indian lucrative Twenty20 league at the age of 13. Rajasthan Royals paid 11 million Indian rupees ($128,750) to sign him after he was seen playing for his home state of Bihar.
At just 12 years old, Suryavanshi also made his debut in the domestic Ranji Trophy and has represented India’s Under-19 team against Australia, where he scored a 58-ball century.
After his triple-century in a local Bihar tournament, cricket fans eagerly anticipate the continuation of Suryavanshi’s stellar performance in the IPL.
