Students from India and China file lawsuit against Trump regarding visa restrictions – DW – April 20, 2025

Three Indian and two Chinese students in the US have filed a lawsuit against the Department of Homeland Security and immigration authorities for revoking the F-1 visas of multiple international students.

The lawsuit, brought by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) before the US District Court in New Hampshire, claims that the Trump administration has terminated the F-1 student status of hundreds, if not thousands, of international students without proper notice.

Lawsuit Details

The lawsuit asserts that students face not only the threat of deportation or visa cancellation but also severe financial and academic hardship due to the government’s unilateral action. It also mentions that the termination of their legal status has been done without the required notice.

The plaintiffs in the lawsuit are Hangrui Zhang and Haoyang An from China, along with Linkhith Babu Gorrela, Thanuj Kumar Gummadavelli, and Manikanta Pasula from India. Each of them has been directly affected by the termination of their visas and their associated research or educational opportunities.

Hangrui’s research assistantship has been terminated, Haoyang may have to abandon his degree after spending a significant amount of money, and the others face imminent challenges in completing their degrees without valid F-1 visas.

Concerns Among International Students

PN>The decision by the Trump administration to tighten student visa policies has led to widespread concern among international students, universities, and advocacy groups. Chinese and Indian students comprise a significant portion of international students in the US.

Over 1,000 international students at US colleges and universities have had their visas revoked or their legal status terminated since late March, according to reports and communications with school officials.
