Trade Discussions: Indian Prime Minister Modi Meets with US Vice President Vance – DW – April 22, 2025

US Vice President JD Vance, on a four-day trip to India, held talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding trade matters, resulting in significant progress toward a bilateral trade agreement. The meeting is seen as an opportunity for India to potentially host Donald Trump later this year for a Quad leaders’ summit, which includes India, Australia, Japan, and the United States. Modi’s office reported advancements in negotiations for the first phase of a trade deal, while Vance’s team also confirmed substantial progress and outlined plans to advance economic discussions. The talks aim to negotiate a modern trade agreement that would promote job creation and welfare in both countries. Following Vance’s meetings, US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer announced the finalization of the Terms of Reference to set the stage for future negotiations on reciprocal trade with India’s Ministry of Commerce. The leaders also discussed increasing cooperation in areas such as energy, defense, and strategic technologies.
