The Democratic Republic of Congo and the M23 rebel group have officially decided to stop fighting without delay, and have also committed to keep negotiating.

After months of intense fighting in the ongoing decades-long conflict, the warring Democratic Republic of Congo and M23 group have released a landmark joint statement emphasizing an “immediate” pause in hostilities. The announcement came on Wednesday from both parties, who have been engaged in a bitter struggle that resulted in M23 capturing several Congolese cities. They have pledged to maintain this ceasefire until negotiations between them reach a conclusive agreement.
