Boris Johnson has strongly criticized Donald Trump’s peace proposals for Ukraine, stating that under such terms, Ukraine would gain nothing. Johnson, a staunch supporter of Ukraine and close to its President Volodomyr Zelenskyy, has previously suggested that there is some logic behind Trump’s approach to ensuring peace. However, in a recent post, Johnson has criticized the apparent conditions of the deal being pushed by Trump on Ukraine.
Trump has accused Zelenskyy of jeopardizing a potential peace deal and indicated that the US might recognize Russia’s control over Crimea as part of any agreement. Following Trump’s statements, Russia carried out a significant attack on Kyiv, leading Johnson to question the proposed rewards for Russia, which include keeping seized Ukrainian territory, controlling Ukraine’s destiny, having sanctions lifted, forming an economic partnership with the US, and reconstructing its military capabilities.
Johnson argues that, after three years of resisting a brutal invasion, Ukraine deserves better than merely the right to share natural resources with the US. He emphasizes that the current proposals do not effectively prevent future Russian invasions and advocates for a well-funded, long-term security guarantee for Ukraine from the UK, the US, and their western allies.
Keir Starmer also condemned the Russian strikes on Kyiv, emphasizing the importance of achieving an unconditional ceasefire and reminding the public of Russia’s aggressor role in the conflict. Trump also criticized the strikes, urging Russia to stop the attacks and complete the peace deal.
While Johnson has been critical of some of Trump’s language regarding Zelenskyy, he has also defended Trump’s peace plan, arguing that it was not intended to escalate conflicts and that the US president does have a viable strategy for ending the war.
