“The word “read” might not be what Mancunians first think of to describe their daily commute, but for Ross Kenyon, 45, reluctantly standing at a tram stop on a cloudy morning in central Manchester, it’s the feeling gripping his body. Why? He dislikes the tram so much that he prefers a half-hour walk to his office rather than taking it. He avoids buses too, citing antisocial behavior as the reason. This includes people playing music aloud or vaping on public transport, which he finds impolite and aggravating. To his liking was the news that the Liberal Democrats are proposing a ban on playing music and television shows out loud on public transport, with potential fines up to £1,000 for offenders. Kenyon isn’t alone in his frustration; many share his annoyance, especially those traveling with children or those who find the loud music or explicit lyrics disturbing. However, not everyone agrees, with some viewing it as a minor issue or something that personally improves their mood during their commute. The Liberal Democrats’ proposal aims to amend the bus services bill currently in parliament, though these changes would only apply to England, as transport policy is devolved.”
