Archaeologists uncover fossilized remains of a 5000-year-old noblewoman in Peru – DW – April 25, 2025

On Thursday, a team of archaeologists made a significant discovery in Caral, Peru. They unearthed the 5,000-year-old remains of a noblewoman, shedding new light on the ancient Caral civilization. According to archaeologist David Palomino, who spoke to the AFP news agency, the woman’s remains were found carefully preserved in layers of fabric, with a mantle of macaw feathers. This suggests that women played a more important role in this ancient society than previously thought.

The remains indicate that the woman was between 20-35 years old and stood at about 5 feet tall (1.5 meters). The team also presented the woman’s funeral trousseau, which included a toucan beak, a stone bowl, and a straw basket. While the exact date of her burial has not been determined, this discovery provides valuable insights into the Caral civilization and its burial practices.
