Her family confirmed on Saturday that Giuffre took her own life at her farm in Western Australia, where she had been residing for several years.
“It is with completely shattered hearts that we announce Virginia passed away last night at her farm in Western Australia. She lost her life to suicide, after being a lifelong sufferer of sexual abuse and trafficking,” the family stated.
The family described Giuffre as a bold fighter against sexual abuse and trafficking, and a “light” who uplifted many survivors.
“Despite all the adversity she faced, she shone so brightly. She is deeply missed,” they commented.
Giuffre is survived by her three children, Christian, Noah, and Emily, who her family said were the “light of her life”.
“It was when she held her newborn daughter that Virginia realized she had to fight back against those who had abused her and so many others,” they added.
In early April, Giuffre had posted on social media that she had only days left to live after a school bus crashed into her car.
In 2021, Giuffre filed a civil lawsuit against Prince Andrew in federal court in New York, alleging that he sexually assaulted her on three occasions when she was 17. Andrew strongly denies these allegations.
It was alleged in the lawsuit that Epstein and Maxwell had introduced Giuffre to Andrew in 2001, and that Maxwell forced her to have sex with Andrew.
In 2022, Andrew and Giuffre reached an out-of-court agreement, with the settlement amount undisclosed. Maxwell, who has maintained her innocence, was sentenced to 20 years in prison in 2022 for sex trafficking.
Epstein was arrested by federal authorities in July 2019 and charged with sex trafficking, but he died by suicide while awaiting trial.
