Approximately 130 delegations, including about 50 heads of state and at least another 10 world leaders, have confirmed their attendance at the funeral to be held at St. Peter’s Basilica.
From the United States, President Donald Trump, who occasionally had a contentious relationship with Pope Francis, will travel with First Lady Melania Trump, a Roman Catholic, to show respect. Former President Joe Biden is also expected to attend, according to Italian media. Notably, Vice President JD Vance and his wife Usha will not be there.
The United Kingdom will be represented by Prince William, who is attending as a sign of respect for the pontiff and continuity of his family’s traditions. Prime Minister Kier Starmer is also expected at the pontiff’s funeral.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni emphasized her friendship with the late pope and cancelled her travel plans to Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan to attend the funeral. Her social media tribute highlighted her esteem for the pope’s teachings and leadership through hard times.
Argentina, the homeland of Pope Francis, will be represented by President Javier Milei, who despite his critical views towards the pope, expressed respect and gratitude in remembering his goodness and wisdom.
Ireland, a predominantly Catholic nation, will have both the President Michael Higgins and Prime Minister Martin attend Pope Francis’ funeral.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed his attendance and praised the pope’s support for peace in Ukraine. His last visit to the pope was in October 2024.
European Union Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will also be in attendance, marking a significant event as it will be the first time she and Trump have attended together since his time in office.
Leaders from nations that had strained relations with the Pope, such as Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, among others, will not be there.
