Greenland’s head of government asserts that the Island is not available for purchase and expresses concerns about the US’s lack of respectful behavior.

Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen stated on Sunday that U.S. officials’ comments regarding Greenland have been disrespectful and that the island cannot be purchased, in opposition to U.S. President Donald Trump, who has suggested buying the strategic territory on multiple occasions.

Nielsen emphasized during a joint press conference with Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen at Frederiksen’s Marienborg official residence in Lyngby, Denmark, that “Greenland can never be anyone’s property to be bought.” Greenland is a semi-autonomous territory of Denmark.

In response to the remarks from the United States, Nielsen underlined, “The talks have not shown respect for us. We need to stand united in this situation.”

Trump has insisted he is serious about acquiring Greenland, deeming it a ‘great economy.’

The political circumstances in Greenland have recently led to the formation of a broad coalition government amid the U.S. targeting of the territory. Greenland has been moving toward eventual independence from Denmark.

Nielsen and Frederiksen’s meeting also focused on fostering future cooperation between Denmark and Greenland. Denmark expressed its commitment to investing in Greenland’s society for both historical and Commonwealth cohesion reasons.

In light of Trump’s interest, Nielsen and Frederiksen were asked if a meeting involving the two of them and Trump had been planned. “We always want to meet with the American president,” said Frederiksen. “But we have been very clear about the Danish commonwealth’s approach to all parts of the Kingdom of Denmark.”
