Dutton asserts most veterans do not wish for a national welcome at Anzac Day ceremonies | Peter Dutton

Peter Dutton has confirmed his belief that welcome to country ceremonies are not necessary for Anzac Day dawn services and commercial flights. His stance has reignited cultural tensions in the last days of the election campaign. This comes after a neo-Nazi was recorded booing and interrupting a welcome to country at a dawn service in Melbourne. Dutton condemned those acts of protest on Anzac Day but stood by previous comments that such acknowledgments are “over the top.” He stated that significant events like the opening of Parliament may warrant such ceremonies but downplayed their necessity elsewhere. Dutton also dismissed Qantas’ practice of acknowledging the traditional custodians of the land where their planes land as excessive. Labor cabinet minister Jason Clare and Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese have voiced their disagreement with Dutton’s views, with Albanese emphasizing that these ceremonies are a matter of respect.
