Mark Carney’s Liberal Party has emerged victorious in the Canadian election, as per the reports by Canadian broadcasters. However, it remains uncertain if they will secure a majority government.
Mr Carney, who assumed the role of prime minister after Justin Trudeau’s resignation earlier this year, has defeated Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre, according to CBC and CTV News.
However, it remains uncertain whether the Liberals will form a majority government, as they have not yet secured the necessary 172 electoral districts.
The election initially appeared to favor the opposition Conservatives, who had a significant lead over the Liberals prior to Mr. Trudeau’s resignation. However, an intervention by Donald Trump resulted in a surge of support for Mr. Carney’s party.
Mr. Trump has consistently called for Canada to become the 51st US state since his re-election as president and has imposed significant tariffs on Canada.
Mr. Carney has pledged to adopt a tougher stance against Washington regarding its tariffs and has stated that Canada will need to invest billions of dollars to reduce its reliance on the US.
In the event that Mr. Carney’s party only secures a minority of the House’s 343 seats, he will be compelled to negotiate with other parties in order to maintain power.
Minority governments in Canada rarely last beyond two-and-a-half years.
Canadians participated in the election following the death of 11 individuals in a deadly attack at a Vancouver street fair over the weekend, which resulted in the temporary suspension of campaigning.
Police have ruled out terrorism and stated that the suspect is a local man with a history of mental health issues.
Prior to his current role, Mr. Carney served as the governor of the Bank of Canada and subsequently became the first non-UK citizen to lead the Bank of England.
