Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Liberal party secured victory in Canada’s federal election, as projected by Canadian broadcasters CTV and CBC News on Tuesday. Despite the win, it is still uncertain whether the Liberals will obtain the majority of 172 out of 343 electoral seats. CBC reported that the Liberals were leading in 161 districts, with the Conservatives leading in 150. CTV News predicted that Carney would not garner the majority he desired to negotiate trade deals better with Trump. This marks a resurgence for the Liberal party, which had lost popularity before former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stepped down in January. Carney called for a snap election just nine days after assuming office to seek a strong mandate. The election saw around 29 million Canadians vote, with 7.3 million votes cast before election day. The campaign was heavily influenced by US President Donald Trump’s statements about Canada becoming the US’ 51st state. Both Carney and Conservative candidate Pierre Poilievre rejected Trump’s idea, with Carney emphasizing Canada’s sovereignty and independence. The “anybody-but-Conservative” factor, Trump’s tariff threats, and Trudeau’s departure all contributed to the Liberal party’s success at the polls. The election result will also be a blow to Trump, who had consistently targeted the Liberals.
