The US government is pursuing a new agreement with the Islamic Republic of Iran over its nuclear program. Talks between the two have been ongoing since mid-April; however, the latest round of negotiations, scheduled to take place in Rome, was postponed. During the ongoing talks, US President Donald Trump increased pressure on Iran by threatening to impose “secondary sanctions” on importers of Iranian oil.
Iran, under international pressure due to its nuclear program, is hopeful for a new agreement that will result in the easing of sanctions. However, the internal rift between the government and the population has widened with the “Woman, Life, Freedom” movement and its suppression. An organized opposition that can offer an alternative to the current rulers has yet to emerge.
The “fight against this regime began the day it took power” and will continue after these negotiations, regardless of their outcome, according to human rights activist Iraj Mesdaghi. Neither a new agreement like the one reached in 2015, nor a military attack on the country’s nuclear and missile sites would be in the interests of the population.
