Spending tens of millions of dollars on advertising and bombarding people with unsolicited text messages may not yield any results for Clive Palmer and his political party, Trumpet of Patriots, in the House of Representatives. As of midday on Saturday, the party has only secured 1.85% of the national vote and unlikely to win any lower house seats. Legalise Cannabis Australia, on the other hand, has won 1.14% of the vote despite spending only $6,200 on social media ads in the last 30 days and barely campaigning. Palmer has claimed credit for stimulating debate about “welcome to country” ceremonies through their advertising spend, but the party’s chances of winning Senate seats in Queensland remain uncertain. The Trumpet of Patriots’ advertisements criticizing the need for “welcome to country” ceremonies disrupted Australian news outlets and social media platforms. Despite the controversial election campaign, the use of unsolicited text messages by political parties in Australia is not new or against the law.
