Bloomberg News: Houthi-Lauched Missile Lands Close to Israel’s Ben-Gurion Intl Airport

A missile originating from Yemen landed in close proximity to Israel’s Ben Gurion airport on Sunday morning, according to Israeli authorities.

Unconfirmed footage circulating on social media suggested that nearby motorists had pulled over to seek cover as a projectile struck, prompting a black plume of smoke near the airport, which is located on the outskirts of Tel Aviv.

According to Israeli media, citing emergency services, the explosion resulted in four injuries, with an additional two individuals injured en route to a shelter.

In a statement, Israel’s defense minister, Israel Katz, pledged, “Anyone who targets us will face a response seven times stronger.”

Yahya Saree, a military spokesperson for the Houthi movement, claimed in a televised address that the Israeli airport was now “unsafe for air travel.”

Following a temporary halt in operations, the airport has since resumed flight activities. As the missile approached, sirens were set off in various regions of the country. The Israeli Air Force is currently investigating the failure to intercept the missile.

People reportedly witnessed a large crater at the site of impact, as covered by local media. The Houthi group, receiving support from Iran and operating out of Yemen, has a track record of launching missile attacks on Israel in support of Hamas in Gaza. However, incidents involving missiles breaching Israel’s air defenses are relatively rare.

Since November 2023, the Houthis have extended their operations to include attacks on ships in the Red Sea, a response to which has been a bombing campaign led by the U.S. against the group, with the U.K. providing support.
