Keir Starmer has commended the “selfless dedication” of military personnel as the government releases a new £50 million support plan for veterans in time for VE Day’s anniversary. In his open letter marking 80 years since the end of World War II in Europe, Starmer acknowledged the immense sacrifice made by armed forces members, emphasizing that their debt can “never fully be repaid.” The nation will display its gratitude during VE Day ceremonies, which symbolize the end of combat on May 8, 1945, and the triumph of good against hatred, tyranny, and evil. Events such as a 1,300-strong procession through London, including NATO, Ukraine, and Commonwealth forces, and a flypast by the Red Arrows and Voyager aircraft, will be held. Additionally, a nationwide two-minute silence followed by a Westminster Abbey service attended by King Charles, street parties, and a 29,000-ceramic poppy display at the Tower of London are planned. On Monday, the government will announce a £50 million funding package for services supporting veterans with housing, employment, health, and welfare aimed at fulfilling Labour’s manifesto promise to implement the armed forces covenant and fund initiatives for veterans struggling to reintegrate into civilian life. Defense Secretary John Healey stressed the government’s duty to support those who have served, promising a UK-wide veterans support service collaborated with health, employment, and housing charities. Starmer will also honor those who served during the second world war and carry their legacy today, emphasizing the importance of service and inspiration that military dedication brings to the nation.
