Police told inquest about parents taking stabbing instruments earlier from perpetrator of Bondi Junction attack

Joel Cauchi, who had schizophrenia, made a call to the police over a year before his attack at Bondi Junction, indicating that his father had taken away his knives due to concerns about his mental health. An officer’s conversation with Cauchi’s mother revealed her exhaustion and the concern over his disruptive behavior at night. The police, who were not fully trained to handle mental health issues, did not take further action, and the knives were only temporarily confiscated. During the incident on April 13, 2024, Cauchi stabbed six people and injured ten others before being shot and killed by a police officer.
