13 individuals discovered deceased within a gold mine – DW – May 5, 2025

Thirteen individuals were found deceased in a mine in Peru after being kidnapped just a few days before. The discovery was made in a gold mine located within Peru’s Pataz province in the northern region of La Libertad, approximately 560 miles away from the capital city of Lima.

According to the mayor of Pataz, the victims, who were both miners and security guards, were discovered tied up in a pit.

Mining company Poderosa expressed in a statement that the recovery of the bodies was made possible due to the efforts of the police rescue team after conducting an intense search.

The victims were employed by a service provider contracted by Poderosa, a prominent gold mining company that has been targeted by armed groups involved in the unlawful mining activities.

The area where the mine is situated has been under a state of emergency for over two years due to ongoing violence and unrest.

Poderosa stated that the persistent violence in Pataz has continued despite the declaration of a state of emergency and the presence of a significant police force. Unfortunately, this has failed to improve the security conditions in the region.

Peru’s interior ministry has dispatched investigators specialized in organized crime to investigate the deaths and warned that their agents are authorized to use their firearms if necessary.
