Individuals responsible for the removal of the beloved British ‘Sycamore Gap’ tree face charges of wrongdoing.

On Friday, two men were found guilty of the act of cutting down Britain’s famous Sycamore Gap tree, a historical landmark that had appeared in a Hollywood movie. This act of “negligent destruction” was described by prosecutors and has caused significant loss to the community and damage to the nearby Hadrian’s Wall, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Daniel Graham, 39, and Adam Carruthers, 32, were found responsible for falling the almost 200-year-old sycamore tree with a chainsaw in a matter of minutes. The tree was a beloved spot for photographers, hikers, and had been featured in the 1991 movie “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves”. The news of the tree’s destruction had provoked widespread anger and grief. Graham and Carruthers, who travel from the Carlisle area, denied involvement but were convicted of criminal damage. They will be sentenced on July 15. The chief crown prosecutor, Gale Gilchrist, highlighted the historic value of Sycamore Gap and condemned the act as deliberate and mindless. The case included a video filming the act, along with messages revealing their pride in their actions. No explanation has been given for their destruction of the famous tree.
