During a shaky truce, Trump vows to increase trade with both India and Pakistan | India

A fragile ceasefire held between India and Pakistan on Sunday, following hours of overnight fighting between the two nuclear-armed countries. US President Donald Trump stated his intention to work towards finding a resolution regarding Kashmir. The intense firing, which lasted for four days and resulted in the deaths of dozens of people, was the worst in nearly thirty years. The ceasefire agreement was reached through diplomacy and pressure from the US; however, within hours of the agreement, artillery fire was heard in Indian Kashmir, the center of much of the fighting. Late on Saturday, India accused Pakistan of violating the understanding to stop firing and announced that Indian armed forces were instructed to respond strongly to any repetition. Pakistan maintained its commitment to the ceasefire and placed the blame for the violations on India. By dawn, the fighting and explosions had subsided on both sides of the border, and power was restored in most areas along India’s border towns after a blackout the previous night. Trump praised the leaders of both countries for agreeing to halt the aggression and announced plans to increase trade with both nations, as well as work towards finding a solution for Kashmir. In the border city of Amritsar, there was a sense of relief as normal activities resumed. The fighting began two weeks after an attack by suspected militants in Indian-administered Kashmir killed 26 men. The two countries, born out of British colonial rule in 1947, have gone to war three times – twice over the region of Kashmir.
