After four days of intense conflict and concerns of an all-out war, the US played a crucial role in mediating a shaky ceasefire between India and Pakistan over the disputed Kashmir region. Although the de-escalation marks the end of the worst military confrontation between the two countries in 25 years, foreign policy experts and diplomats believe that the ceasefire will not easily lead to enduring peace. The US role was seen as helpful, leveraging IMF conditionalities and more to hasten the end of hostilities. Both sides have made their points, using the military escalation to test each other’s resolve. Despite mutual accusations of violations, the ceasefire is expected to hold in the short term due to international pressure and recognition of escalation costs. Long-term challenges still include terrorism, water security, and strained relations. Both militaries remain on high alert, but the risk of flare-ups remains, especially in contested areas along the Line of Control.
