Preserving the Overlooked Saya de Malha Bank Ecosystem

Located at the heart of the Indian Ocean, the Saya de Malha Bank is the site of the world’s largest underwater seagrass beds. Serving as a crucial lung for the ocean, this relatively unknown 40,000 km² area captures CO2 at a rate 35 times faster than a tropical forest, providing a vital habitat for numerous marine species. However, this rare and valuable ecosystem, predominantly situated in international waters, is currently being devastated by industrial fishing fleets.
