Keir Starmer is set to reveal the Labour government’s immigration white paper, intended to make the visa system more restrictive.

While party policies undergo changes when governments shift, there tends to be more policy continuity than politicians often concede. Bar a major overhaul 18 months prior under James Cleverly, various administrations have been accepting of high net migration levels – both during the UK’s EU membership and afterward. Prior to the Tories’ departure, net migration surged under their rule.

Comprehensive reforms, continuing in the same direction initiated by the Conservatives, are expected to be announced. This policy has been in evolution since Starmer’s 2022 CBI address when he signified his intention to reduce Britain’s reliance on immigration.
