International Organization Holds Russia Accountable for Destroyed Flight MH17 – DW – 05/13/2025

On Monday, the aviation council of the United Nations declared that Russia was accountable for the tragic downing of the Malaysian Airlines flight over Ukraine in 2014, resulting in the deaths of nearly 300 individuals on board. The incident, which included 196 Dutch citizens and 28 Australian citizens, was brought to attention in 2022 by Australia and the Netherlands. The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Council stated that Russia violated its obligations under international law by failing to prevent the downing of Flight MH17, marking the first time in its history that the council has intervened in a dispute between two member states. Such ruling is vital in establishing the truth and ensuring justice and accountability for the victims and their families. Both the Netherlands and Australia have called on Russia to acknowledge its responsibility for the incident and make reparations as required under international law.
