French President Macron Considers Utilizing Nuclear Arsenal in Europe – DW – May 14, 2025

French President Emmanuel Macron expressed openness to discussing the potential deployment of France’s nuclear weapons across Europe during an interview with TF1 on Tuesday. He highlighted that the US already stations nuclear-armed aircraft in countries like Belgium, Germany, Italy, and Turkey. Macron emphasized that any expansion of France’s nuclear deterrence to other European nations would be subject to certain conditions, including that France would not finance the security of others, and its defense capabilities must remain intact. Control over the use of such weapons would remain with the French president. He revealed that France possesses 280 nuclear warheads and has the capability to launch these independently or via jets. Macron also touched on France’s potential cooperation with European allies as some leaders express uncertainty about the US’ commitment to Europe’s defense amid Russian threats.
