Airbnb is now allowing users to book high-end services such as personal trainers, massages, and chefs through its redesigned app, as it further expands beyond its primary business of short-term rentals.
“People often choose hotels for their additional services. With Airbnb, they choose for the space… Now, we’re offering you the best of both worlds,” Airbnb’s CEO Brian Chesky stated in a press release.
This development comes soon after the company warned that bookings might slow down in the US due to President Trump’s trade policies affecting consumer confidence.
Despite hosting over two billion guests since its launch in 2008, Airbnb has faced challenges in recent years, including cities banning short-term lets.
Airbnb’s new services will initially be available in 260 cities, starting at below $50 (£37.57).
The luxury offerings, ranging from spa treatments to photography and makeup, can also be booked by those not staying in Airbnb accommodations.
The updated app also features an enhanced experiences tab, allowing users to book personalized tours and activities, a service introduced in 2016.
Gary Bowerman, director of travel marketing firm Check-in Asia, noted that the new features reflect the evolving needs of tourists.
“Travelers are now prioritizing how to customize their trips, beyond just the logistics of getting there and where to stay.”
Another new feature is the originals tab, offering exclusive experiences worldwide.
This includes unique activities such as playing beach volleyball in Rio de Janeiro with former Olympian Carol Solberg or spending a day with NFL superstar Patrick Mahomes.
Bespoke experiences like these cater to a broader trend as tourists increasingly seek unique and off-the-beaten-path experiences, according to luxury travel consultant Anastasia Oriordan.
“With so many people having traveled and experienced a lot, the criteria for what constitutes a unique experience is constantly rising.”
