Tragedy struck when a 23-year-old social media influencer, Valeria Marquez, was fatally shot while streaming live on TikTok at her beauty salon in Zapopan, Mexico. Video footage from her livestream shows Marquez responding to someone off-camera before being shot and collapsing. The violent incident has shocked the community and proves distressing for her followers on social media. Authorities indicated that a male shooter entered the salon, deceived Marquez with the pretense of bringing a gift, and fired shots. Zapopan, located near Guadalajara and a hub for criminal activities, including the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, has intensified safety concerns. Officials are exploring whether the motive is linked to her presence on social media or if gender-related factors played a role, indicating this may be a case of femicide. Zapopan’s mayor expressed astonishment at the situation and lamented the lack of prior threats reported that could have suggested danger. Mexico, along with Paraguay, Uruguay, and Bolivia, has been marked as having the fourth-highest rates of femicide in Latin America. Further adding to the tragedy, a former congressman, Luis Armando Cordova Diaz, was also shot to death in the same area shortly after Marquez’s murder, deepening concerns of violence in the region.
