Climate change and wildlife depletion are intensifying the European Union’s “chocolate crisis,” a report argues, with cocoa being one of six primary commodities predominantly sourced from nations vulnerable to environmental threats. Over two-thirds of the EU’s 2023 imports of cocoa, coffee, soy, rice, wheat, and maize originated from nations poorly equipped to handle climate change, according to UK consultants Foresight Transitions. For cocoa, wheat, and maize, two-thirds of imports came from countries with compromised biodiversity, exacerbating the vulnerability of food production to climate impacts. The report, commissioned by the European Climate Foundation, suggests that major chocolate manufacturers should invest in climate adaptation and biodiversity protection in cocoa-producing countries, highlighting this as a strategic move to mitigate supply chain risks. Experts advocate for shifts toward healthier and more sustainable diets to enhance the resilience of food systems against climate shocks.
