US chip export controls have been deemed a “failure” by Nvidia’s CEO, Jensen Huang, at a tech forum on Wednesday. The Chinese government has also criticized US warnings to other countries against using Chinese tech. US administrations have implemented restrictions on hi-tech AI chip sales to China in order to hinder China’s military progress and safeguard US dominance in AI. However, Huang claims that these controls have actually spurred on Chinese developers. He also praised China’s vibrant technology ecosystem and its large number of AI researchers. Nvidia, which designs high-end GPUs, has been significantly affected by US chip export controls. Its share in China’s AI chip market dropped from almost 95% to 50%. Additionally, Nvidia’s CEO made an unexpected visit to Beijing to discuss new chip designs that wouldn’t trigger the new US bans. The US government has also recently announced new guidelines warning companies about using Chinese-made hi-tech AI semiconductors amid existing US export controls. In response, China accused the US of using export controls to suppress and contain China.
