The incident took place on Wednesday evening near the Capital Jewish Museum, close to an FBI office.
Israel’s ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, condemned the act as “a vile and antisemitic terrorist attack.”
He commented on X: “We trust that US authorities will take decisive actions against those accountable for this heinous crime.”
So far, investigators have not determined a possible motive for the shooting.
Pamela Smith, the police chief of Washington DC, confirmed during a briefing that a single suspect is in custody. The individual reportedly shouted “free, free Palestine” while being detained.
Reports indicate that the suspect was seen walking back and forth outside of the museum before approaching a group of four individuals, drawing a handgun, and opening fire.
Mayor Muriel Bowser stated, “There’s no ongoing threat to our community. However, this dreadful incident is bound to unsettle many in our city and nation.
“Let me be clear: we will not stand for this violence or hate in our city.”
