Deadly Blast on NYC Sewage Vessel Claims Life of City Employee

A boat carrying untreated sewage on the Hudson River, located in New York City, experienced an explosion that resulted in the death of a long-time city employee, as reported by authorities. In addition to the fatality, another worker on the city-owned Hunts Point vessel sustained injuries and was transported to the hospital following the incident, which occurred around 10:30 AM on Saturday near the North River wastewater treatment plant. A third worker declined medical attention. The New York City mayor, Eric Adams, mentioned that there is no suspicion of criminal intent behind the explosion. The US coast guard stated that the workers on the boat, responsible for transporting untreated sewage for treatment, were involved in work that involved flames or sparks when the explosion occurred. First responders discovered an unconscious 59-year-old man in the river, who was subsequently declared dead at the scene. The man had dedicated 33 years of service to the New York City’s environmental protection department. The mayor expressed deep sympathy for the employee’s family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time. The explosion caused raw sewage to spread over the deck of the boat, requiring firefighters and other first responders to undergo decontamination procedures.
