Spain’s Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares has called for an arms embargo against the Israeli government to put an end to the conflict in Gaza, which he referred to as inhumane and senseless. Albares also suggested that targeted sanctions could be imposed on individuals who obstruct the two-state solution. He emphasized that an arms embargo against Israel must be a collective effort, stating that the last thing the Middle East needs is more weapons. Spain intends to propose a suspension of the trade partnership between the European Union and Israel, which is currently under review. Spain has been a harsh critic of Israel within the EU and officially recognized Palestine as a state. The meeting in Madrid aimed to put pressure on Israel as several Western allies demanded an end to its military campaign in Gaza.
