Trial begins in Germany of four individuals accused of aiding IS – DW – May 26, 2025

The trial of four Russian nationals, accused of being part of a criminal organization and supporting terrorism, is set to begin at the Hanseatic Higher Regional Court in Hamburg. They are charged with using social networks to gather approximately €174,000 ($197,000) in donations for the Islamic State (IS). Although far-right violence has become more prevalent in Germany, the threat from religious extremists remains significant, according to Konstantin von Notz, a Green Party politician and chair of the Parliamentary Oversight Panel. The latest report from the Ministry of the Interior, presented by Alexander Dobrindt from the Christian Social Union (CSU), indicates a rise in politically-motivated crimes, with a significant portion being attributed to right-wing extremists and anti-Semitic motives since the beginning of the war in Gaza in October 2023. The number of crimes committed by Islamist extremists, however, has remained consistent. Currently, there are several ongoing trials regarding the collection of funds for IS in Germany, reflecting the continued focus of terrorist organizations, including IS and Al-Qaeda, on Europe and thus on Germany.
