German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced on Monday that Germany, along with France, the UK, and the US, has lifted restrictions on the range of weapons being sent to Ukraine to support its defense against Russia. According to Merz, there are now no range restrictions on weapons delivered to Ukraine, allowing it to defend itself more effectively. He emphasized the continued support for Ukraine in a post on X. The Kremlin responded by criticizing the decision as “dangerous” and at odds with efforts for a political settlement. Western countries, including the UK and France, have already supplied Ukraine with Storm Shadow/Scalp cruise missiles and the Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS), but the previous German government had refrained from sending long-range Taurus missiles. Merz did not specify any changes regarding the Taurus missile system, and the new government is adopting a position of strategic ambiguity regarding the weapons being sent to Ukraine.
