Ukraine weapon capabilities expanded – no range limits – DW – 05/26/2025

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz recently announced that Germany, alongside France, the UK, and the US, has lifted restrictions on the range of weapons that can be supplied to Ukraine to assist in its defense against Russia. This allows Ukraine to now target military positions in Russia, which was previously limited. Merz stressed that this move is part of continued support for Ukraine. However, the Kremlin views this decision as a “dangerous” move that contradicts efforts towards a political settlement. The change in policy reflects a shift in Western countries’ approach to arming Ukraine, which initially excluded long-range weapons to prevent conflict escalation.
