Tesla’s European Market Share Drops 52% in April, Says Trade Organization – DW – May 27, 2025

In Europe, the demand for electric cars is on the rise, but this has not led to an increase in Tesla sales. Instead, a study has shown that Europeans are buying fewer Teslas than they did before, following a trend that has been observed over recent months.

According to data from the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association, Tesla sold only 5,475 cars in April, which marks a 52.6% decrease compared to the same month in the previous year. In the first four months of this year, Tesla sales were down 46.1% compared to the same period last year, resulting in just 41,677 cars being sold.

This decline in Tesla sales is consistent with earlier data that showed a sharp drop in sales in Germany and the UK in April. These countries, which were once strong markets for Tesla, are now seeing a decrease in demand for the electric car brand.

At the same time, Chinese car brands are gaining popularity in Europe. In April, Chinese manufacturer BYD surpassed Tesla as the leading choice for pure electric cars in Europe. BYD sold 7,231 pure electric vehicles in April, compared to Tesla’s 7,165.

Experts have suggested that Tesla’s slow rollout of its latest Model Y and Elon Musk’s involvement in US politics may be contributing factors to the decline in Tesla sales in Europe. While Mercedes and Volkswagen continue to be popular choices in Germany, BYD and other Chinese car brands like Nio and Xpeng are gaining popularity in countries like Spain and Italy.

The shift towards Chinese car brands in Europe suggests a changing landscape for the automotive industry. As consumers become more environmentally conscious, the demand for electric vehicles is expected to continue growing, but it is clear that Tesla is no longer the dominating force in the European market that it once was.
