A federal trade court has blocked Donald Trump from imposing extensive tariffs on imports using an emergency-powers law. The ruling from a three-judge panel at the New York-based court of international trade came after several lawsuits accused Trump of exceeding his authority, jeopardizing US trade policy, and causing economic instability. The court stated that the “Worldwide and Retaliatory Tariff Orders” exceed any authority granted to the President by the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. The White House did not respond immediately to a request for comment, but is expected to appeal. At least seven lawsuits have been brought against the tariffs, which are a cornerstone of Trump’s trade policy. While tariffs are typically approved by Congress, Trump insists that he has the power to act due to the country’s trade deficits. However, critics argue that the emergency powers law does not authorize the use of tariffs and that trade deficits do not meet the law’s requirement for an emergency.
